![]() ![]() I'm not sure if this is the right forum to make such a request, but, we would like to see a 'Microsoft Office for Linux' developed and made available to various mainstream distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat). Issues when opening documents from other internal/external MS Office users. They also use Libre Office (Open Office fork) and have some compatibility We have a number of clients that use Linux desktops (mostly Ubuntu) and would like a better solution to connect to the exchange server than using a limited feature set of a web browser. Hope to see some developments in this field sooner rather than later. Would need to create all the required plugins for major browsers (yes, Google Chrome constitutes as one of them, Microsoft!), not only for Firefox. Provided as cross platform subscription service it would do killing for any Open Office fork. connectivity goes down and with no access to documents collaboration and productivity grind to halt.Īn ideal solution would be online Office application suite that can be used as cached copy (HTML5) with synchronised files (Skydrive, Dropbox, Google Docs). However there's a slight problem here (like with all internet apps/services) - it does rely on the Internet connectivity. The latter is already happening with Office 365 for SME/corporate user and Office Live/Skydrive for home user. Historical reasoning would be fear of losing some of OS market where their products are available cross platform. This is a valid request and surely a lot of people can't see any logical reasoning behind M$ not implementing Linux native Office package. From a financial perspective it makes sense for Microsoft to be able to profit from at least an 'Office for ' sale per machine where they would other-wise not make any profit at all from these companies. There will always be people that prefer one O/S over another or a business decision that has determined which O/S aĬompany will use. I'm simply saying that not all companies settle on Windows. ![]() I'm not saying any O/S is any better or worse than any other O/S. It has now had Office for Mac for a number of years and still is only a small percentage of the total O/S market. I disagree with the statement that 'there would be no reason to buy Windows.'. LibreOffice is good for basic Office document compatibility (which probably suits most users, as will accessing exchange via a browser) but I'm sure over time, the compatibility with more advanced features and formatting will improve. For everyday desktop use, Linux alternatives are as good as Windows offerings-except for office There would be no reason to buy Windows if Office were made available for Linux. However, I don't think we will see a 'Microsoft Office for Linux' any time soon. It's as efficient as any simple text editor! In Linux, I often use the text editor instead of Libre Writer for making notes, so that I haveĪ clean document in the end. I need office software for work, I am not a programmer or artist, and it really is a delight to use Microsoft Word. Editing copy (usually MSWord created) in LibreOffice is a tightrope walk. ![]() I use Linux (Debian KDE), and I am unhappy with LibreOffice. ![]()
